Part 2: Grammar Focus
Topic: The > Je... Desto... < Seesaw
This structure balances two comparatives. The Grammar rules for the two halves are opposite.
1. The > Je < Clause (Subordinate)
Acts like a > Nebensatz <.
The Verb goes to the End.
Example: > Je schneller du fährst, ... <
2. The > Desto < Clause (Main Clause)
The word > Desto < (or > Umso <) plus the Adjective counts as Position 1.
Therefore, the Verb must come immediately after the adjective.
Example: > ... desto früher kommst du an. <
(Lit: ... the sooner arrive you.)
3. Common Mistakes
Wrong: - Je mehr ich esse, ich werde dicker. - (No English word order!)
Wrong: - Je mehr ich esse, desto ich werde dicker. -
Right: > Je mehr ich esse, desto dicker werde ich. <
4. Desto vs. Umso
They are 100% interchangeable.
