Part 1: Story & Dialogue
Context: A crisis meeting in the office. The project is going badly. The language is very formal.
Chef: „Meine Damen und Herren, wir müssen ein Gespräch führen.“
Ladies and gentlemen, we must conduct a conversation (talk).
Chef: „Die Verkaufszahlen sind schlecht.“
The sales figures are bad.
Mitarbeiter: „Wir haben uns Mühe gegeben, aber der Markt ist schwierig.“
We gave (ourselves) effort (tried hard), but the market is difficult.
Chef: „Das genügt nicht. Wir müssen Maßnahmen ergreifen.“
That suffices not. We must seize/take measures (act).
Chef: „Wer trägt die Verantwortung für diese Fehler?“
Who carries the responsibility for these errors?
Mitarbeiter: „Ich möchte Kritik üben an der Marketing-Strategie.“
I would like to exercise criticism (criticize) of the marketing strategy.
Mitarbeiter: „Die Werbung hat keine Rolle gespielt.“
The advertising played no role (was unimportant).
Chef: „Das ist nur eine Ausrede.“
That is only an excuse.
Chef: „Wir müssen jetzt eine Entscheidung treffen.“
We must now make (hit) a decision.
Chef: „Entweder wir verbessern das Produkt, oder wir nehmen Abschied vom Projekt.“
Either we improve the product, or we take leave (say goodbye) from the project.
Mitarbeiter: „Darf ich eine Frage stellen?“
May I place a question (ask a question)?
Mitarbeiter: „Steht noch Budget zur Verfügung?“
Is there still budget at disposal (available)?
Chef: „Nein. Das Projekt ist zu Ende.“
No. The project is at an end (finished).
Chef: „Wir müssen die Konsequenzen ziehen.“
We must pull the consequences (face the music).

Note how the verb changes (e.g., „treffen“ usually means "to meet/hit", but here it means "to make").

Topic: Why use Nomen-Verb-Verbindungen?
You might ask: Why make it complicated? Why say "take a walk" when I can say "walk"?
1. Nuance and Precision The noun phrase allows you to add adjectives to describe the action more precisely.
Simple: „Wir haben entschieden.“ (How? Quickly? Badly?)
Nomen-Verb: „Wir haben eine schwierige, aber notwendige Entscheidung getroffen.“ It is much harder to pack all that info into the verb „entscheiden.“
2. Passive Constructions These phrases sound excellent in the Passive voice (common in official letters).
Active: „Wir entscheiden das.“
Passive Phrase: „Eine Entscheidung muss getroffen werden.“ (A decision must be reached).
3. "Function Verbs" (Funktionsverbgefüge) The verb in these phrases is "empty."
„Treffen“ usually means "to meet" or "to hit." In „Entscheidung treffen“, it just means "to do."
„Führen“ usually means "to lead." In „Gespräch führen“, it just means "to do/have."
Warning: You cannot swap the verbs easily. You cannot say ~~"Eine Entscheidung machen."~~ You must memorize the pair: Entscheidung + treffen.
Part 4: The Transformation Drill
Transform the "Simple Sentence" into the "B2 Business Sentence".
Simple: „Kann ich dich etwas fragen?“
B2: „Kann ich dir eine Frage stellen?“
Simple: „Wir müssen das Projekt beenden.“
B2: „Wir müssen das Projekt zu Ende bringen.“
Simple: „Das Geld ist da (available).“
B2: „Das Geld steht zur Verfügung.“
Simple: „Er kritisierte den Chef.“
B2: „Er übte Kritik am Chef.“
