Part 1: Story & Dialogue
Context: Mr. Klein and Ms. Berg are discussing a risky business project. The conversation is formal and critical.
Hr. Klein: „Frau Berg, sind Sie sicher, dass dieses Projekt funktioniert?“
Ms. Berg, are you sure that this project works?
Fr. Berg: „Das hängt von der Finanzierung ab.“
That depends on the financing.

Part 3: Grammar Focus
Topic: The "Bestehen" Trap & Da-Compounds
1. The "Bestehen" Switch The verb „bestehen“ changes its meaning completely depending on the preposition. This is a classic test trap.
Bestehen AUS (+ Dat): Material / Composition. „Der Tisch besteht aus Holz.“ (The table consists of wood).
Bestehen AUF (+ Dat): Stubbornness / Insistence. „Ich bestehe auf meinem Recht!“ (I insist on my right!).
Bestehen IN (+ Dat): The core definition. „Das Problem besteht darin, dass wir kein Geld haben.“ (The problem consists in the fact that...).
2. Recap: Da-Compounds with Abstract Verbs When referring to things/ideas (not people), use „davon“, „darauf“, „daran“.
Question: „Wovon hängt es ab?“ (On what does it depend?)
Answer: „Es hängt davon ab, ob wir Zeit haben.“ (It depends on that / on whether we have time).
Question: „Worauf basiert der Bericht?“ (On what is it based?)
Answer: „Er basiert darauf, dass...“ (It is based on the fact that...).
3. "Basieren" Logic (Auf + Dative) Why Dative? Because the base is static. The building stands on the foundation. It doesn't move onto it. „Der Film basiert auf einer wahren Geschichte.“ (Dat).
4. "Sich beziehen" Logic (Auf + Accusative) Why Accusative? Because a reference is an arrow pointing towards something (Direction/Target). „Ich beziehe mich auf Ihren Brief.“ (I refer to your letter).
