To use "Da-words", you first need to know which preposition belongs to which verb. You must memorize these pairs!

Topic: Da-Compounds vs. Pronouns
How do you translate "for it/him/her"? It depends on whether you are talking about a Thing or a Person.
1. Talking about THINGS / IDEAS (The "Da" Rule) If the object is a thing (the vacation, the money, the car), connect da + preposition.
Structure: da + (r) + preposition.
Note: If the preposition starts with a vowel (auf, an, über), add an extra r to make it sound nice.
auf - darauf (Not: daauf)
an - daran
mit - damit (No 'r' needed, 'm' is a consonant)
Examples:
Are you waiting for the bus? Yes, I am waiting darauf (for it).
Are you dreaming of the house? Yes, I am dreaming davon (of it).
2. Talking about PEOPLE (The Pronoun Rule) If the object is a human (Lukas, Mom, the brother), you CANNOT use "Da". You must use the preposition + the person (him/her).
Structure: Preposition + Pronoun (Acc/Dat).
Examples:
Are you waiting for the bus? - Ich warte darauf.
Are you waiting for Tom? - Ich warte auf ihn. (NOT: darauf).
Are you dreaming of Anna? - Ich träume von ihr. (NOT: davon).
3. Asking Questions (Wo-Compounds) To ask "What are you waiting for?", German uses Wo + Preposition.
Waiting for what? - Worauf wartest du?
Thinking about what? - Woran denkst du?
Dreaming of what? - Wovon träumst du?
