1. "In" vs. "Im" (Future vs. Seasons)
Im (in dem): Used for static containers like Months/Seasons (Im Mai, Im Sommer).
In (+ Dative): Used for a future duration. "In X minutes/days/years" from now.
Ich komme in 10 Minuten. (I'll be there in 10 mins).
Wir sind in einer Woche fertig. (We finish in a week).
2. "Ab" vs. "Seit" (Start Points) This is a classic mistake.
Seit: Starts in the Past + continues now. (Seit gestern).
Ab: Starts Now or Future + continues forward. (Ab heute, Ab morgen).
Wrong: Ich bin ab gestern hier.
Right: Ich bin seit gestern hier.
Right: Ich bin ab morgen im Urlaub.
3. Von ... bis (Ranges) Used for a span of time.
Ich arbeite von 9 bis 17 Uhr.
Note: If you use dates, you add the article (dem): Vom (von dem) 1. Mai bis zum (zu dem) 10. Mai.
4. Während + The Genitive (During) This is your first encounter with the Genitive Case (The "Of" case). The preposition während (during) demands the Genitive.
Masculine/Neuter: der/das becomes des (+ s at end of noun).
Der Test - Während des Tests. (During the test).
Das Essen - Während des Essens. (During the meal).
Feminine: die becomes der (no "s" at end of noun).
Die Pause - Während der Pause. (During the break).
Die Arbeit - Während der Arbeit. (During work).
