1. Ordinal Numbers (The "th" numbers) In English: 4 - 4th. In German: 4 - 4. (We use a dot after the number).
Rule A: Numbers 1–19: add -te.
der vierte (4.), der fünfte (5.), der zehnte (10.).
Exceptions: erste (1st), dritte (3rd), siebte (7th), achte (8th - only one t).
Rule B: Numbers 20+: add -ste.
der zwanzigste (20.), der dreißigste (30.).
2. Saying the Date: "Der" vs. "Am" This is the most confusing part for beginners. The ending of the number changes depending on the word before it.
Situation A: "Today is the..." (Nominative)
Use der + ending -e.
Heute ist der erste Mai. (Today is the 1st of May).
Heute ist der zwanzigste April.
Situation B: "On the..." (Dative)
Use am (an dem) + ending -en.
Ich habe am ersten Mai Geburtstag. (On the 1st...).
Die Party ist am zwanzigsten Mai.
3. Prepositions of Time (Summary)
Um + Clock Time: Um 8 Uhr.
Am + Days/Dates: Am Montag, Am 3. Mai.
Im + Months/Seasons: Im August, Im Winter.
4. Writing Dates In German, the day comes first.
